BARMY council chiefs have baffled local drivers by putting up road signs in POLISH.
Highways chiefs splashed out on the warnings — not repeated in English — despite only SIX PER CENT of locals coming from Poland.
The eight signs near Crewe, Cheshire, help Poles follow roadwork diversions.
Neil Anderton, of the Cheshire County Council highways department, said: “A few weeks ago we had to stop work and let Poles drive through an area we were working on because they could not fathom what was going on.”
But there is NO advice nearby for locals — despite the scheme being funded by taxpayers. Resident Paul Walker, 55, said: “This is the most ludicrous example of political correctness.”
Last night it emerged the signs were ILLEGAL.
The Department for Transport said they breach traffic regulations and the council had failed to get permission to put them up.
POLE the other one! At the top of the page are the two signs on the Cheshire and Shropshire border put up by the council. They say “DIVERSION A49 for Whitchurch and nearby places” and “For A49 to Whitchurch turn right at next junction”. We say: “Ale my nie wiemy które które,” which means in Polish, “but we don’t know which is which!”
